Lady Kudzu announces itself with a rumble of rolling drums and distant guitar fuzz, followed by a lone, rather menacing cowboy guitar line. Palomino Party won Oxjam’s ‘Battle of the Jams’ competition back in September, and having borne witness to their frantic live show it’s pretty clear why. This is their first readily available recording, and when the band do come riding out of the storm, it’s a good introduction to their sound: galloping, Spaghetti Western-inspired frenzy, not unlike that which Muse and The Last Shadow Puppets have dabbled in previously. One wonders if they can keep up this pace, but it’s a promising start. JDE
