Singer/songwriters need an original hook like a race car needs fuel – without it they’re never going to go anywhere. That’s not sufficient, of course. Any muppet can get behind the wheel of a car in the same way that even the most average of singer/songwriters can arrive at a winning original idea – it’s those who truly own their craft that achieve infamy. Kaya Street falls very much into this bracket. A delightfully lethargic song writing style echoes throughout the album making the bare bones of the tracks appealing enough but it’s the African-inspired instrumentation and rhythms which really places Kaya Street amongst more esteemed company. Echoes of Paul Simons ‘Graceland’s’ ring out over an album that simply couldn’t be any easier on the ears. Superb stuff. JS
