Barely Regal’s own (and indeed its owners) Among Brothers took an age to soundcheck, all the while person upon person tessellated their heads to build an impenetrable hair wall between MMP and the band. The Undertone pillars were also rather unhelpful in this respect but such is the charm and quirk of the venue and, evidently, Among Brothers’ appeal. Not that the lack of visual identification really mattered. It was definitely them. You could tell by the immensely thoughtful soundscapes that borrowed from electronica and offbeat indie experimentalism, layering harmonies and almost Dexy’s-esque shared vocals. In totality, this meant a proper aural treat with each new, imaginative and unexpected turn convincing us more and more that these chaps are the real frickin’ deal.
Long-time MMP darlings, Hail! The Planes have certainly grown since our love affair with them was instigated. With a six-piece line-up now inclusive of trumpet and soprano sax, alongside the traditional bass, guitar, drums and violin, they looked a very happy, crowded family. Their literary post-folk, as we often describe it, has also expanded; the new instrumental options adding further richness to their already deep sound. The sprawling and textured tracks, led by Holly Muller’s sweet vocals, outlined so many moods, it’s as though they somehow collapse several days of real lived experience into somewhere between three and ten minute nuggets. It’s an incredible talent for a few individuals to be capable of. Long may this romance continue. SMR
