The Hounds Of Czar

The Hounds Of Czar are Swansea’s answer to Flight of the Conchords; only weirder and Welsh. We collared Hounds co-founder Rod to get the story so far…

So, how did it all get started?
We all met whilst staying in the same ward in Hospital. The four of us were in for a few months, got chatting and decided to start a band. The Hounds of Czar was born. We practiced and practiced and practiced till we couldn’t practice no more. But then disaster struck. Our lead vocalist, Dr. Huw, got transferred to another Hospital. With our first gig fast approaching, we had to learn how to stand on our own 8 feet (which was ironic as we were all in for leg related injuries). We played on crutches to the residents of the deaf ward. They loved it. We loved it. The blind ward hated it but we took their criticism on board and strived for excellence. We are still striving to this very day with no signs of excellence whatsoever.

It was bit like a cross between “Glee” and “Only When I Laugh”.

We started taping ourselves on an old Commodore 64 tape deck, trying to make each other laugh, writing stupid songs and just generally cocking about as most kids do. It was that way for many, many years. Then the internet came along.

What do the Hounds of Czar want to achieve?

Not a great deal if we’re totally honest with you. We like to make each other laugh and we enjoy ripping off as many different musical genres/bands/era’s as humanly possible. We want to make some more videos…maybe some gigs. As Cyndi lauper once said “Girls just want to have fun”. That’s us. Except for the girls bit.

Why did you start doing this in the first place?

It’s fun. We dare each other to try and write a song that sounds like something we heard on the radio that morning. We dare each other to write the most stupidest lyrics. We dare each other to sing it like you mean it. We dare each other to rap. We dare each other to dare each other. It’s musical peer pressure. It’s basically bullying. Each other. For fun. With music.

What you’ve got going on at the moment? What’s next?

We are currently building a spaceship set for our upcoming first ever short film/rock popera “Treasure on Caldey Island”. It’s an epic tale of one man, one map and a mission to save the world, and Caldey Island, from impending doom. It’s got everything in it…boats, guns, monks, giant spiders, intrigue, suspense, songs, spaceships and value for money. It’s taken us ages..and we’ve got loads more to do. So check it out.
